Workshop on LEAF-writer

Learn LEAF-Writer: the new text encoding web tool for textual editors

Diane Jakacki will lead a workshop on LEAF-writer in the CRIHN office on Monday 20 February @ 2pm. This is a 90-minute workshop to introduce all manner of textual editors to LEAF-Writer, a new web-based, easy-to-use platform that supports text encoding and annotation without users having to learn complex coding languages.

In this hands-on workshop participants will be introduced to the concepts of semantic and scholarly annotation using Digital Humanities standards and best practices, learning how to support your work in semantic markup, add inline scholarly notes and glosses, and create annotations – tagging named entities and associating them with recognized authorities to provide connections between your work and that of other researchers on the Semantic Web.  LEAF-Writer can be used effectively in a variety of group collaborations as well as in classroom settings.

Working with supplied materials, participants will be able to experiment with texts in a number of genres, including prose, verse, and documentary archival materials. There will also be time for participants to experiment with their own materials in LEAF-Writer.

Requirements: participants will need a web-enabled laptop computer (not a tablet or a mobile device). No software installation is required.

LEAF-Writer is a core component of the Linked Editing Academic Framework virtual research environment. LEAF-Writer’s ongoing development and access are made possible through generous funding from the Mellon Foundation, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and support from the University of Guelph, the University of Alberta, and Bucknell University.
