Since 2005, the FRQSC-funded group « Interacting with Print » has developed and continues to elaborate an innovative approach to the investigation of print culture based on the concept of interactivity. We investigate how people interacted with printed matter, how they used print media to interact with other people, how printed texts and images interacted within complex media ecologies, and finally, how our own interactions with print via new digital technologies are reshaping our knowledge of the past. “Interactive” is a word most often associated with digital technologies, but we contend that a nuanced concept of interactivity is key to developing an understanding of print, which emerged as the main communications technology in Europe from 1700-1900.
